Visit Pompeii: Complete Guide for First-Time Visitors

Visiting Pompeii Archaeological Park is one of the most unforgettable experiences in southern Italy. The ancient Roman city was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and remained hidden for centuries before being rediscovered.
Today Pompeii is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through its streets allows visitors to experience what daily life was like in Roman times.
This guide explains how to visit Pompeii, what to see and where to stay near Pompeii for a comfortable trip.
Why Visit Pompeii
Pompeii is unique because the eruption preserved buildings, streets and everyday objects almost intact.
Visitors can explore:
-
Ancient Roman houses
-
Temples and public buildings
-
Frescoes and mosaics
-
Shops and bakeries
-
Roman streets and fountains
Unlike many archaeological sites, Pompeii is a complete city where you can walk for hours discovering new places.
Most visitors spend between 3 and 5 hours exploring the ruins.

What to See in Pompeii
Given the size of the site, a tour of the Archaeological Park may require visitors to choose which areas to visit. In this case, the following highlights should not be missed:
-
The Forum – the political and social center of the city
-
The Amphitheatre – one of the oldest Roman amphitheatres
-
The House of the Faun – one of the largest houses in Pompeii
-
The Villa of the Mysteries – famous for its frescoes
-
The Thermal Baths – ancient Roman baths
Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended because Pompeii is very large.

Purchase tickets in advance to avoid long lines at the entrance.
-
Bring water, especially in summer
-
Wear comfortable shoes
-
Use sunscreen and a hat
-
Plan your route before entering

Access to the Archaeological Site
The archaeological site has three main entrances.
Porta Marina is usually the busiest entrance. Located near the Circumvesuviana train station, it is the most convenient access point for visitors arriving by train.
The Piazza Esedra entrance (Porta Marina Inferiore), also close to the Circumvesuviana station, provides access to the Antiquarium and is generally less crowded.
